菖翁花 しょうおうか（１） Japanese iris variety Shououka series
自らを「菖翁」と名乗り、６０年にわたって花菖蒲の改良と新品種の作出に情熱を傾けました。
江戸時代後期、花菖蒲の発展に大きな功績を残したのは旗本、松平左金吾定朝（まつだいらさきんごさだとも）です。

菖翁により作出された花を「菖翁花」といいます。１２０種の品種が作出されたようですが、現在は１７種前後が現存するのみとなっています。
戦前の品種は江戸古花と呼ばれ、今でも明治神宮御苑を始め各地の花菖蒲園や個人で大切に保存されています。
堀切菖蒲園では、品種の保存と江戸情緒の創出に役立てるため、現在も菖翁花の名を引き継ぐ、１０種余りの栽培管理をおこなっています。
In the latter half of the Edo period, Hatamoto Matsudaira Sakingo Sadato (also known as Matsudaira Sakingosa) made a major contribution to the development of irises.
Calling himself "Shobu", he devoted himself to improving Japanese irises and creating new varieties for 60 years.
The flower produced by Shoo is called "Sho flower". It seems that 120 kinds of cultivars were produced, but now only around 17 kinds exist.
The pre-war variety is called Edo Kobana, and even today it is carefully preserved in iris gardens in various places, including the Meiji Jingu Gyoen National Garden, and by individuals.
At Horikiri Shobuen, we continue to cultivate and manage more than 10 varieties of iris that carry on the name of Shobu, in order to help preserve the varieties and create the atmosphere of Edo.

歴史的名花。名は中国前漢時代の元帝の後宮から匈奴に嫁がされた王昭君の終焉地が青い城を意味することから、美しい青の本種を孤高の美女になぞらえたもの。
